About the Reid Health Emergency Medical Services Training Institute
Reid Health offers training and educational opportunities for those wishing to become a certified emergency medical technician (EMT) or a licensed paramedic. Both career paths allow graduates to become first responders with paramedics receiving more in-depth training and education to perform duties with a wider skill set.

Paramedic Program Admissions
- The application window will be open April 1-14, 2024. Admitted applicants will be notified by May 1 of acceptance.
- Applicants will be tested for math and reading competencies as well as basic EMT knowledge and skills.
- Applicants will complete a panel interview.
- Scores from all testing, transcripts, and interviews will be totaled and ranked to determine admissions offers.
- After admissions, students will be required to complete a drug screening, full criminal background check, TB testing, physical assessment, and submission of vaccination records.
Paramedic Program Details
- Total program cost is $8,000 and includes a drug screen, full criminal background check, TB testing, branded uniforms (shirts/outerwear), textbooks, online course access, online testing access, and online clinical tracking access.
- A $500 deposit is required to accept admission. The remaining fee will be paid in three installments, with $2,500 due before the start of each term.
- Classes are located at Ivy Tech's Richmond campus.
- Classes are held 3:30-9:30 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays.
- Maximum class size is 15 students.

Is financial assistance available?
Reid Health employees will receive 50% off the cost of the program.
Are Reid Health employees eligible for this program?
The first cohort is open to any non-RN Reid employee. After the first course has finished, Reid Health RNs will have the opportunity to apply and potentially test out of most of the material, needing only to complete skills and clinical hours.

Do I have to get the associate's degree?
No, you aren't required to continue your education in pursuit of the associate's degree.
Is the A/P course required?
Yes, A/P 101 must be completed before you begin the program. If A/P 102 hasn't been completed by the time the program begins, it can be taken concurrently with the first term of the Paramedic Program.
Is CPR certification other than AHA acceptable?
No.
I have an NREMT or Ohio EMT certification. Is that acceptable?
No, you must be Indiana EMT-certified.
Where will the ambulance clinical be completed?
Richmond Fire Department and Reid EMS are the main ambulance sites. Other services might be used as necessary.
If I'm not accepted for the current class, will I be put on a wait list?
Yes.
What equipment am I responsible for providing?
You'll need to provide your own uniform pants, belt, boots, stethoscope, and wristwatch.
I have a criminal conviction. Am I disqualified from participating?

I already completed part of a paramedic course at a different location. Can I get advanced placement into the course?
No, the Reid Health Paramedic Program is a selective admissions process based on math/reading competency scores, basic EMT knowledge, skills performance scores, and results from a panel interview.
EMT Training Course | What you can expect
EMT Program Details
Classes are held on the main Reid Health campus in Richmond. Classes meet Monday and Thursday from 5:30 - 9:30 PM and some Saturdays 8AM - 4PM. Course fee is $1000 with $250 deposit to reserve a spot. Payment plans are available.
EMT Course Structure
Emergency Medical Technician training is divided into 5 modules:
- Operations
- Airway Maintenance
- Patient Assessment
- Medical Emergencies, Trauma
- Special Patient Populations.
Students will obtain CPR certification and become proficient in a wide array of skills including airway management and ventilation, pharmacology and medication administration, bleeding control and splinting, and emergency childbirth.
This college-level course is academically rigorous and requires a high degree of dedication. A variety of content delivery methods are utilized including classroom lecture, online components, and independent self study. Successful completion of the course enables students to obtain National Registry EMT certification, as well as Indiana EMT certification.
