Fight it here: Medical Monday topic focuses on breast cancer education
Oct. 4, 2024 -- More than 310,000 women and men will receive their first diagnosis of invasive breast cancer this year. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an effort to fight the disease by raising awareness and providing education, hope, and support for people actively battling breast cancer, survivors, and caregivers.
Detecting
breast cancer early helps to increase treatment options and improve patient
outcomes. Across the U.S. there are more than 4 million breast cancer
survivors.
Casey Krogman,
Nurse Navigator for Reid Health Breast Center, is the presenter for October's
Medical Monday and Thriving Thursday. Krogman will discuss breast cancer,
screenings, and programs available at Reid.
The Community
Spotlight guest for both events is Roxie Deer, founder of the Deer Family Fund,
to talk about their support for breast cancer awareness and prevention
initiatives.
The Deer Family
Fund was established in 2022 after Deer's mother, Jan, passed away from breast
cancer in 2017. The fund supports local organizations through programs
including breast cancer education and providing cooling caps for patients, offering
individuals the ability to minimize hair loss associated with the effects of
chemotherapy treatment.
Thriving
Thursday is at 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 10 in Connersville at the Fayette County
Senior Center, 477 N. Grand Ave.
Medical Monday
is at 1 p.m. on Oct. 21 at Central United Methodist Church, 1425 E. Main St. in
Richmond.

maintained it after joining Reid Health. The events have loyal followings,
averaging 40 to 50 guests each month to learn about various health issues,
community programs, and health screenings.
