Men’s Health Month: Thriving Thursday encourages men to take charge of their health
June 3, 2024 -- Nationally, men on average live five years less than women. Throughout National Men's Health Month in June, men are encouraged to learn what they can do to improve their health and prevent disease.
Jordan Parrett,
MD, Reid Emergency Department, will present on men's health during Thriving
Thursday at 11:30 a.m. on June 13 in Connersville at the Fayette County Senior
Center, 477 N. Grand Ave. Dr. Parrett's talk will focus on preventing acute
illness and ER visits while maintaining a healthy and high-quality life regardless
of aging.
Men, along with
the support of their family and friends, can take charge of their health. When
it comes to healthcare, women are 69% more likely than men to seek preventive care,
leading to healthy behaviors and screening for diseases or conditions,
according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The highest
mortality rates for men are related to heart disease, cancer, injuries, lung
disease, stroke, and diabetes.
To encourage
more men to participate in their healthcare, men's health month focuses on the
importance of regular checkups, understanding health concerns and risks, and
making healthy lifestyle choices.
The "Community
Benefit Spotlight" guests for Thriving Thursday are Mike Horning, Director, and
Amy Hicks, Assistant Director, of Pathway to Damascus Recovery Center for Men,
a new faith-based residential recovery program in Connersville. Pathway to
Damascus offers men ages 18 and over the tools and skills to start new in life.
"Community Benefit Spotlight" is a 10-minute segment focusing on a different
Reid Health Community Benefit partner each month and that organization's impact
within the community.
