Students gain hands-on experience through new Paul & Pat Lingle Summer Internship Program

College juniors and seniors are getting hands-on workplace experience while exploring a variety of nonclinical healthcare careers through the Paul & Pat Lingle College Summer Internship Program at Reid Health.

During the eight-week program, 10 interns are working alongside Reid team members on projects to build professional skills in a healthcare setting.

Reid's first paid internship program is supported by the Paul & Pat Lingle Experiential Learning Scholarship Fund, established through a gift to the Reid Health Foundation. The endowed fund provides hourly wages for interns, making it possible for more students to participate in paid internships.

Jason Troutwine, Reid Health Vice President and Reid Foundation President, said the program represents an investment in both students and the region.

“The generosity of Paul and Pat Lingle is creating opportunities that will have a lasting impact on students and our communities,” Troutwine said.

“We're excited to welcome these students and show them how many different careers contribute to exceptional patient care and hope they one day choose to build their future careers here.”

Korbyn Lehman of Richmond and Anna Schweitzer of Centerville, Indiana, are part of the internship program’s first cohort.

Lehman is interning in Emergency Medical Services and Trauma Services. A student at Indiana State University studying applied medicine with a minor in massage therapy, she plans to become a physician assistant.

Working with Ryan Williams, Director for EMS, Forensics, and Trauma Services, Lehman has had the opportunity to connect with team members in the Emergency Department and learn about healthcare operations.

“This has been an amazing experience, and everyone has been very welcoming and supportive, which makes this internship so memorable,” Lehman said.

Schweitzer, an exercise science major at Indiana University Bloomington, is interning with the Marketing & Communications Department to learn about the marketing side of healthcare as she prepares for a career in physical therapy.

She participates in marketing projects and campaign planning while developing a broader understanding of how marketing supports nearly every area of the organization.

Schweitzer said the internship is a great opportunity to gain valuable experience while easing the financial burden of college.

“There are very few paid internships available generally, and being able to do one in my hometown and with an amazing team is just a cherry on top,” Schweitzer said.

“I’m also able to save money, which will prevent me from having to take out loans during my undergraduate studies. I’m definitely learning lots of hard and soft skills this summer, and being compensated fairly for this work is fantastic.”

The internship program is part of Reid Health’s Education and Career Pathways initiative, which also offers career panels, clinical rotations, job shadowing, facility tours, and other experiences for high school and college students to explore healthcare careers and strengthen the region's future workforce.

Michelle Holliday, Manager for Educational Partnerships at Reid Health, said the internship program helps students develop skills and confidence.

“Students will leave here with greater confidence, stronger communication skills, and a better understanding of what it's like to work in the healthcare environment,” Holliday said.

Interns were selected through a competitive application and interview process before being matched with the department that aligned with their academic interests and career goals.

The inaugural cohort began with orientation June 22 and will complete the internship Aug. 14.

• Kara Berger: A Richmond, Indiana, native and Seton Catholic High School graduate majoring in nursing at Purdue University, interning in the Emergency Department with Brandon Glover, Associate Director of Emergency Services & Observation
• Gage Ferrell: A Straughn, Indiana, native and Tri Junior-Senior High School graduate majoring in business administration and applied health science (administration track) at IU East, interning in Administration with Jason Troutwine, Reid Health Vice President/Reid Foundation President, and Education Partnerships with Michelle Holliday, Manager for Educational Partnerships

Applications for the summer internship program’s second cohort will open in March 2027.
