Apply now for EMS Training Institute's next EMT class
Reid Health’s EMS Training Institute is accepting applications now for its emergency medical technician (EMT) program.
Those interested in getting started in a career as a first responder can go to https://reidhealth.org/Career-Opportunities/Education-and-Career-Pathways/EMS-Training-Institute/EMT-Program to fill out an application for Reid’s next EMT class, which will run from Nov. 30, 2026, through May 27, 2027.
The Reid Health EMS Training Institute prepares students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to begin a meaningful career in emergency medical services. EMTs are trained to:
- Assess patients and determine immediate medical needs
- Provide emergency medical care and basic life support
- Manage airways and help with breathing emergencies
- Control bleeding and stabilize injuries
- Help during traumatic events and medical emergencies
- Safely transport patients to appropriate care
There are 20 spots available in the upcoming class, with a $250 deposit required to reserve your place. Those who aren’t accepted into the current cohort will be placed on a waiting list for the next opportunity.
Total cost of the program is $1,150 with payment plans available.
Classes will be held 5:30-9:30 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays and consist of 215 course hours and 72 hours of clinical time, all in-person.

“Becoming an EMT is a great entry into a healthcare-related field and offers many possibilities for future career pathways, and our class is designed to allow you to continue working or attending school during your training.”
Applicants who aren’t already CPR certified can complete that instruction through the EMS Training Institute or through its partner, Ivy Tech Community College in Richmond.
Some students take general education courses through Ivy Tech Richmond while earning their EMT certification then continue toward earning their paramedic license and an associate degree after completing the EMT program.
“EMT training provides a stackable pathway that allows students to achieve Ivy Tech health credentials like the Healthcare Specialist TC/AAS, Paramedic AAS, or earn additional points toward some selective admission health program applications,” said Heather Wierzbinski-Cross, Dean for the Schools of Nursing & Health Sciences at Ivy Tech Richmond.
