An annual wellness visit for students
Summer vacation time is almost over which means that students and particularly student athletes are starting to look forward to the fall sports season. But before your child pulls on a jersey and laces up their sneakers they may need to head to the doctor's office for an annual wellness visit.
Whether your child plays at the middle school high school or college level he is likely required to be examined by a doctor before he hits the field each year. And even in schools where this is not required doctors still highly recommend that all student athletes have a physical before the sports season begins according to TeensHealth. And of course an annual well visit should be scheduled for all students even those not pursuing team sports activities.
Student-athlete wellness visits typically involve a physical exam and questions about your child's medical history. By performing these tasks a doctor can ensure that your child is healthy enough to participate in practices games or physical activity in a safe way.
Physical exam
According to TeensHealth during the physical exam portion of the visit the doctor will usually record your child's weight and height take his pulse and blood pressure and check his throat nose ears abdomen lungs and heart. He may also test your child's vision and evaluate his flexibility strength joints and posture.
Medical history
During your child's wellness visit the doctor will also ask questions about your family's medical history which could potentially lead to additional testing. For instance if any of your close relatives were treated for heart disease particularly at a younger age the doctor might perform tests or screenings to assess your child's risk for developing heart issues while she plays or practices.
The medical history segment also involves questions about any previous health problems your child may have had. Your child's doctor will likely ask him about previous surgeries or hospitalizations allergies past injuries and whether or not he experiences symptoms that could indicate underlying health issues such as dizziness or chest pain.
After performing an exam and reviewing your family's medical history your child's doctor might take the opportunity to discuss healthy choices with her. This may include the importance of eating right getting enough sleep and even avoiding drug or alcohol use. The doctor may also offer guidance on how your child can stay in shape during the off season.
An annual wellness visit can ensure you that your child is in the physical shape necessary to participate in sports or play without being at an increased risk for obtaining an injury or having complications due to a medical condition. As such scheduling this visit is an important step in preparing for the upcoming fall season.
