Occupational medicine: Supporting a healthy workforce

Occupational medicine focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of work-related injuries and illnesses. It's designed to help employees maintain their health, safety, and well-being on the job. Our occupational medicine providers work closely with both employers and employees to ensure workers are fit for their roles and any job-related health concerns are managed effectively.

Occupational medicine at Reid Health

We understand the importance of maintaining the health and safety of the workforce. Our team of healthcare providers supports employees through injury treatment, preventive care, and regulatory compliance.

We offer a range of services including in-clinic care and injury treatment. Our in-clinic services provide essential health assessments -- such as drug and alcohol testing, vision testing, immunizations, and CDL physicals -- as well as specialized testing like lift and follicular tests. For injury treatment, we provide expert care for burns, lacerations, some fractures, sprains, strains, concussions, and more.

Reid Occupational Medicine performs evaluations and treatments that align with the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) guidelines.

Treatment of workplace injuries

Employee injuries are treated by a Reid Occupational Medicine care provider with extensive emergency medicine experience, with oversight by a current emergency medicine doctor.

The provider coordinates care by obtaining authorization needed for treatment; ordering diagnostic imaging like X-rays, CTs, and ultrasounds; and making referrals to specialists as needed. Post-injury drug and alcohol testing and follow-up visits (if applicable) are also scheduled by the provider.

Comprehensive evaluation and treatment of work injuries, exposures, and illnesses include, but are not limited to:

  • Burns, lacerations, eye injuries, foreign bodies
  • Fractures (which might also be managed by our Emergency Department depending on severity)
  • Exposures to chemicals, blood, body fluids, Tuberculosis (TB), or environmental toxins
  • Musculoskeletal injuries like sprains, strains, or contusions

FAQs

When to schedule your DOT exam

We recommend scheduling your DOT exam three to four weeks before your current certification expires. This ensures you have time to gather any additional information from your provider, if necessary. On average, it takes practices 7-10 days to complete the required DOT information request forms for drivers. By planning ahead, you can avoid last-minute stress and potential delays in your certification.

What to expect after the DOT exam: Certified drivers

After receiving your DOT certification:

  • Send a copy of your physical and certification card to the state agency that issues your CDL. Please note: Reid Occupational Medicine won't provide this on your behalf.
  • Provide a copy of your certification card to your employer. Employers will only receive a copy of your full physical if you give consent during your appointment. You'll only receive one copy of your physical unless you request more.
  • Continue to partner with your provider to prioritize your health. Monitor and address any health concerns that might arise before your next certification visit.
  • Follow any recommendations given by your Reid Occupational Medicine provider. Following recommendations will help ensure no disruptions to your certification and will help you maintain your overall health.

What to expect after the DOT exam: Determination pending

Determination pending means our provider needs additional information regarding your medical conditions to make a final decision on your certification.

To complete your certification process, please have your provider(s) fill out the DOT Medical Information Request Form and submit any additional documentation requested by Reid Occupational Medicine. Once submitted, you might be asked to schedule a follow-up appointment to finalize your certification.

To help avoid a "determination pending" status, we recommend referring to the items listed on the DOT Driver Preparation Form. Begin preparing at least three to four weeks before your exam to ensure all necessary information is gathered in advance.

What is the process for treatment?

Our staff will provide authorized services and treat emergent injuries. If no authorization is provided and a company account has been established, our staff will treat the patient by following the company account -- unless there's a note requiring authorization.

If an account hasn't been established, we'll attempt to call the employee's company for authorization of services to be performed. This could cause delays for the patient. If we're unsure what services the patient needs, there's no authorization present, and we can't reach the company, the patient will be referred to their employer.
