Pulmonary Rehabilitation
The focus of Reid's pulmonary rehab program is to improve the quality of life for people with chronic lung disease through individual health education, relaxation techniques, nutrition counseling, physical activity and hands-on support.
The process includes educating the patient and others who are a significant part of the patient's life. Understanding a chronic disease is the first step in developing a positive self-image and leading a more productive and enjoyable life.
The team
The pulmonary rehab team consists of a respiratory therapist, nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, a pulmonologist and family physician who are committed to promoting the health of the pulmonary patient.
Who can pulmonary rehab help?
Do you find yourself getting breathless performing simple tasks once taken for granted? Do you sit on the sidelines and watch others perform activities you once enjoyed? If you answered "yes," and have been diagnosed with one or more of the following, pulmonary rehab may help you:
- Asthma
- Emphysema
- Chronic bronchitis
- Bronchiectasis
- Pulmonary fibrosis
- Lung surgery
- Environmental or occupational lung disease
Getting started
You will need a signed program referral or prescription from a doctor to be enrolled. The referral and other information about your physical condition links us to your doctor so that we may work together as a team to provide your care. You may need a limited physical exam and diagnostic tests. Your physician may order any or all of the following:
- Chest X-ray
- Exercise stress test
- Pulmonary function test
- Electrocardiogram
- Basic blood test
The program
The outpatient program can include up to 36 sessions. The sessions are one hour twice a week. A friend or family member is encouraged to accompany you. A maintenance program will follow based on your needs and your doctor's recommendations.
