April Ambassador ‘is the definition of Reid’s values’

April 7, 2025 -- You only need to read one nomination to understand why Thomas Duncan, DO, of Reid OB/GYN has been named Reid Health's Ambassador for the month of April.

"He has gone above and beyond for me and my care," the person said. "He has made sure all my questions are answered and nothing is missed. He even shed a few tears with me knowing how hard of a time I'm having with everything I'm going through and hugged me and knew exactly what to say to comfort me and let me know I can fully trust him."

A member of the Reid staff for the past seven years, Dr. Duncan is lauded by co-workers for the care he shows both his patients and staff.

"He's the definition of Reid's values," one person said. "He's always respectful and kind to staff, and he's always willing to share his knowledge with others so they can learn and grow. Dr. Duncan is one of the best providers to work with. Reid is very fortunate to have him on our team."

"Dr. Duncan is known for his exceptional bedside manner, particularly during labor and delivery, where the experience is often filled with anticipation and emotion," another co-worker said. "He ensures every patient under his care feels not only physically supported but emotionally at ease as well.

"By taking the time to listen, educate, and provide reassurance, he helps guide families through one of the most significant moments of their lives with confidence and comfort. His focus on patient-centered care is unwavering, ensuring each individual feels heard, valued, and respected every step of the way."

Originally from Ammon, Idaho, Dr. Duncan now lives in Richmond with his wife, Emily, and their three children -- Elliana, Phoebe, and Cora.

"I couldn't do what I do without my beautiful, supportive wife and amazing kids," he said. "Emily keeps me grounded and manages all the things my job prevents me from being able to do. She's always happy to bend over backwards to make my life better and I love her for it."

When not working, Dr. Duncan stays busy with his kids' activities and he's an avid reader.

"At any point in time, I'm engaged in five-plus different series, just waiting for the next book to be published," he said.

Dr. Duncan credits the team he works with for helping him be a better provider.

"My support team in the office enables me to do more for my patients. My nursing staff on the Family Birthing Center makes my job easy by providing excellent care for my patients. All of it allows me the opportunity to connect with my patients. Not just hearing symptoms and prescribing treatment, but the chance to really get to know the people who trust me with their care," he said.

"I've met patients from all walks of life, from those who have never been to an OB/GYN up to those who have advanced degrees, and each patient presents different perspectives and needs that keep my job interesting and unique. The gratitude that is expressed after helping my patients with difficult pregnancies or deliveries, or those requiring surgical management for various reasons, keeps me motivated and reminds me what I do matters."
