Culberson scholarship recipient is all in for a future in the business of healthcare
June 6, 2024 -- Hagerstown senior Collin Beaty has an all-in mentality. He's intentional about putting everything he has into whatever he's doing, including academics and athletics.
Beaty
was presented with the Culberson Family & Reid Health Scholarship during
the Honors Program at Hagerstown High School on May 30. The award is a one-year
scholarship of $1,000 to a graduating HHS student who intends to seek a degree
or certificate in healthcare, emergency services, or mortuary science.
Ryan
Williams, Reid's Director of EMS, Forensics, and Trauma Services, presented the
Culberson scholarship to Beaty. For Williams, a Hagerstown alumnus, the
opportunity to present this award was extra special. He also happens to know
Beaty. His son and Beaty have played baseball together since they were kids,
and their families have become close.
When
presenting the award, Williams acknowledged a business degree will equip Beaty
for his goal to help as many people as he can as he prepares for a career in
healthcare. A business degree can be applied to healthcare in the areas of
accounting, business development, marketing, practice management, and more.
Williams said Beaty's also considering other academic programs leading to a
career in EMS or nursing.
According
to Beaty, a commitment to academics combined with his participation in varsity
athletics have prepared him for life. He's learned balance and life lessons
taught by teachers, coaches, and his parents, Ron and Lyn Beaty.
"I've
always been told by my parents grades were the most important thing when going
to school, and I took that to heart," Beaty said.
A
three-sport athlete, he was a member of Hagerstown's football, basketball, and
baseball teams. Beaty earned top grades, leading to being named Academic
All-State for baseball and Academic All-Conference in football. Additionally,
he was a member of the stunt squad, National Honor Society, and National FFA
Organization.
"I
think the main factor that sets me apart from everyone else is no matter what I'm
doing, I'll give 110%, whether it's school or sports," Beaty said.
As
far as sports, he'll continue playing his favorite pastime with the Franklin
Grizzlies. On May 17, Beaty committed to play NCAA Division III baseball while
attending Franklin College.
The scholarship carries the name of the family
that operated Culberson Ambulance Service in the Hagerstown area for more than
50 years. Service transitioned to Reid Health EMS at the beginning of 2022
after the retirement of owner Rick Culberson.
Reid officials worked
with the Wayne County Foundation to establish the endowed scholarship in honor
of Culberson and his family's dedication to the community. The scholarship was
first awarded in 2022.
