Rock Steady Boxing
Rock Steady Boxing
Rock Steady Boxing is a non-contact boxing program that was developed to improve the quality of life for those who have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. The classes are designed to accommodate individuals of all fitness levels and no prior boxing experience is required.
Fighting Parkinson's
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurological disorder that affects nearly 1 million people in the United States. It is a disease that currently has no cure nor has research determining its cause. As the noted Movement Disorder Specialist, neurologist Abraham Lieberman, M.D. has described it, "Every day, people with Parkinson's awaken, trapped in their bodies."
Reid is proud to be the first hospital affiliate for Rock Steady Boxing!
New potential boxers receive an initial assessment at no cost to determine what specific level of class that they should be assigned to. This is a great opportunity for the potential boxer to get questions answered that they may have about the program.
Exercises can be modified or alternative exercises can be recommended to accommodate each individual's needs. All coaches are certified through the Rock Steady Boxing Headquarters.
Why boxing?
Recent studies suggest that this type of exercise may be neuro-protective, i.e., actually slowing disease progression
A cure may be years away, but Rock Steady Boxing has demonstrated that anyone can lessen their symptoms and lead a healthier/happier life in all stages of Parkinson's.
Boxing moves the body in all planes of motion while continuously changing the routine as you progress through the workout emphasizing:
- Gross motor movement
- Strength and Core Strength
- Muscular Endurance
- Balance
- Footwork and agility
- Movement accuracy and rhythm
- Hand-eye coordination
This program is supported by a community grant from the Parkinson's Foundation.
