Tobacco prevention and cessation at Reid Health

Reid Health is committed to helping organizations and individuals in Wayne County and surrounding communities to prevent and/or stop the use of commercial tobacco products. Our new Tobacco Prevention and Cessation department provides guidance, resources, support, and connection to help you build a healthier life.

The Indiana Department of Health defines commercial tobacco use as cigarette smoking, e-cigarettes/vaping, and smokeless tobacco (chewing tobacco, nicotine pouches, etc.).

Whether you use cigarettes, e-cigarettes, vaping devices, or other nicotine products, Reid Health is here to partner with you on your journey to quit.

Why it matters when you quit smoking

Smoking and nicotine use are linked to chronic illnesses, higher healthcare costs, and long-term health risks. In Wayne County alone:

  • 24% of adults use tobacco, well above the national average.
  • Nearly 11% of pregnant women smoke, affecting infant health.
  • Smoking contributes to thousands of illnesses and more than 100 deaths annually.

Quitting improves health almost immediately and reduces your risk of heart disease, cancer, and lung disease.

16.2%

Percentage of Hoosiers who smoke cigarettes, which is higher than the national average of 14.0% (IDOH)

8%+

Percentage of Hoosiers who’ve reported using e-cigarettes in the past 30 days (IDOH)

66%

Nearly 2 in 3 who use e-cigarettes and 1 in 2 adults who smoke cigarettes want to quit. (IDOH)
