According to AARP independent living communities are suitable for healthy independent seniors who enjoy the social value of living in a community of peers.
Independent living residents reside in private apartments that include a stove refrigerator and private bathroom. The apartment sizes range from studios to spacious two bedrooms and the communities offer residents convenient access to restaurant-style dining medical care entertainment social outings fitness and more.
Independent living housing is paid privately with average rent being $1500 to $3500 per month according to A Place for Mom. Additional hospitality services such as housekeeping meals laundry and additional physical assistance are usually available for a fee.
Assisted living facility
Assisted living facilities and communities are great options for seniors unable to live safely and independently on their own but who don’t require the high-level care of a skilled nursing facility noted the Administration on Aging. Assisted living facilities help residents with medication management activities of daily living meals and light cleaning. Housekeeping and maintenance services are commonly included in the rent in addition to laundry services utilities and transportation. Residents live in private studio apartments that include a private bathroom and a partial kitchen area. The rent covers three meals daily that are provided in a central dining room.
Assisted living facilities are designed to engage your mom through residential activities social events out-trips and scheduled transportation that helps to improve her quality of life. Around-the-clock workers are available for added safety and many assisted living communities offer licensed nursing services. Some communities may also provide dedicated Alzheimer’s units.
Assisted living facilities are mostly paid privately but some may accept Medicaid. A Place for Mom reported the typical rent between $2500 to $4000 per month depending on the apartment size and assistance level required. Alzheimer’s care costs $2800 to $4500 per month for a double suite.
Although senior living options may seem extensive determine the best environment based on your mom’s wishes finances and amount of assistance required. When considering senior living options plan ahead. Even if your mom doesn’t need assistance now her care needs may suddenly change and require additional services.
