Recipe: Vegetarian Sausage Gravy
Servings: Approx. 6
Ingredients:
- 5 tbsp. unsalted butter
- 7 tbsp. whole wheat flour
- 1 packet of Veggie Crumbles (MorningStar Farms, Boca, could use MorningStar Farms Sausage Patties, chopped)
- ½ tsp. salt-free garlic and herb seasoning
- 3-4 cups low-fat milk (could use unsweetened almond milk)
- Salt and Pepper to taste
1. Add butter to skillet over medium heat, once melted add veggie crumbles, warm through.
2. Add flour and stir to cook for 1-2 minutes.
3. Add ½ tsp. salt-free garlic and herb seasoning.
4. Slowly add in 4 cups milk.
5. Bring to a simmer (do not boil), whisking/stirring constantly until thickened.
6. Turn off heat once thickened, season with salt and pepper to taste.
Tips:
1. To add more flavor could sauté diced onions when the butter melts in step 1, before adding in the veggie crumbles.
2.
If you like heat, can add in red pepper flakes to taste in step 3.
