Stroke Support Group

Life after a stroke can feel overwhelming for survivors and their loved ones. Reid Health’s Stroke Support Group helps survivors, families, and their caregivers find comfort, connection, and strength as they navigate this new journey.

Recovery brings change, but you don’t have to face it alone. Learning more about stroke, managing your health, and taking steps toward prevention can make a lasting difference.

As a nationally certified Primary Stroke Center recognized by the American Heart Association and Healthgrades, we’re dedicated to providing exceptional stroke care and ongoing recovery support.

Emotional and physical recovery often benefit from shared understanding and encouragement. When you attend the Stroke Support Group, you’ll find a welcoming environment.

Survivors and caregivers can expect:

  • Connection with others who understand life after stroke
  • Education about disease management, prevention, and healthy living
  • Practical advice and encouragement from our Stroke Support Group specialist
  • Discussion of coping strategies and lifestyle adjustments
  • Guidance on nutrition, exercise, and habits that support brain and heart health
  • Tools to manage recovery challenges and reduce future stroke risk

Key facts about stroke

Although a secondary stroke is possible, understanding risk factors and recognizing warning signs can bring peace of mind and confidence in prevention. Locally, more than 500 people receive emergency stroke care at Reid Health each year, and 1 in 4 stroke survivors will experience a secondary stroke, according to the American Stroke Association.

We’re committed to providing exceptional, evidence-based stroke care, and we’re nationally recognized by the American Heart Association Get With The Guidelines® – Stroke program for our dedication to rapid response, quality treatment, and improved outcomes for stroke patients.

Recognizing the signs and symptoms of stroke is crucial. Up to 80% of recurring strokes could be prevented through medical care, knowing your risk factors, healthy lifestyle choices, and early recognition of warning signs. Getting treatment quickly can greatly improve survival and recovery.

And recovery doesn’t end when you leave the hospital.

Know the signs of stroke by remembering B.E.F.A.S.T.

B – Balance: Trouble walking or loss of coordination

E – Eyes: Blurred or double vision, or vision loss

F – Face: Facial drooping or uneven smile

A – Arm: Weakness, numbness, or paralysis

S – Speech: Slurred speech or difficulty understanding

T – Time: Call 911 immediately — every second counts
