What is sports medicine?

Sports medicine focuses on helping people prevent, diagnose, and recover from injuries related to physical activity. Although the name might sound like it’s only for athletes, it’s for anyone who wants to stay active, mobile, and pain-free, whether you play competitive sports, enjoy weekend workouts, or simply want to move comfortably in daily life.

At Reid Health, our sports medicine specialists combine advanced medical care, rehabilitation, and education to help patients heal, strengthen, and safely return to their favorite activities.

When should you see a sports medicine specialist?

You don’t have to be a professional athlete to benefit from sports medicine. You might want to see a sports medicine provider if you experience:

  • A sudden injury like a sprain, strain, or fracture
  • Ongoing joint or muscle pain that limits activity
  • Repetitive motion injuries from work, exercise, or sports
  • Performance issues such as decreased strength or flexibility
  • A need for rehabilitation after surgery or injury
  • Questions about injury prevention, conditioning, or safe return to play

Our goal is to restore function, relieve pain, and prevent future injury, keeping you active and doing what you love.

Common conditions we see

  • Sprains and strains
  • Tendonitis and bursitis
  • Ligament injuries (ACL, MCL, rotator cuff tears, etc.)
  • Dislocations and instability
  • Fractures and stress fractures
  • Overuse injuries
  • Cartilage damage
  • Concussions and head injuries
  • Hip, knee, shoulder, and ankle pain

These injuries could occur suddenly during activity or develop over time because of repetitive movement. Our specialists use advanced diagnostic imaging and personalized treatment plans to identify the root cause and get you back to full strength.

Common sports medicine treatments

Treatment plans are designed to fit each patient’s unique needs and goals, whether that means returning to competition, staying active, or simply moving without pain.

Non-surgical treatment options

  • Rest, bracing, and targeted physical therapy
  • Ultrasound-guided injections
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Concussion evaluation and management
  • Custom return-to-play or conditioning programs

Advanced surgical treatments

When surgery is needed, our fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons perform minimally invasive procedures using the latest techniques to restore function and stability.

Procedures  include:

  • ACL and ligament repair
  • Meniscus and cartilage surgery
  • Shoulder and rotator cuff repair
  • Repair for hip injuries
