What is acute rehabilitation?

Acute rehabilitation — also referred to as acute rehab — is an intense, round-the-clock inpatient therapy for those who’ve had a major medical event, especially ones that led to concurring conditions or complications, such as:

Who can use acute rehab?

To qualify for our inpatient services, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You need at least two forms of therapy in your recovery plan
    • Occupational
    • Physical
    • Speech-language
  • You’re medically stable and can safely transition to our care
  • You have an identified discharge plan
  • Your function can be improved with rehab
  • You can achieve independence after treatment
  • You have an active support system who’ll take part in your therapy
  • You can maintain up to three hours of therapy five days a week

Robotic exoskeletons

Exoskeleton robotic devices are lightweight, hard mechanical frames that are adapted to fit you, helping adults and children learn to walk. Reid Health was the first in the region to offer this innovative equipment for children.

Functional Electric Stimulation cycles — also known as e-stim bikes — deliver tiny electric pulses by electrodes to help those with limited leg movement pedal a stationary bike, improving your heart and lung function while regaining muscle mass.

Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluations of Swallowing (FEES) studies can be performed bedside, allowing our speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to assess your swallowing abilities and adjust treatments as you progress through therapy.
