What are cysts?

A cyst is a small, sac-like pocket of fluid, tissue, or another substance that can develop anywhere in the body, including the skin and internal organs. Cysts can vary in size and shape.

Though many cysts aren’t dangerous, some can grow large and unsightly, causing pain and embarrassment. When they don’t go away on their own, Reid Health surgeons can treat these troublesome growths using draining, freezing, or surgery.

During cyst removal surgery, a surgeon takes out the substance inside the cyst or the entire cyst. Your provider will discuss the pros and cons of different approaches to your case.

Cyst removal at Reid Health

It takes expertise to know when and how to perform cyst removal. Our general and plastic surgeons in East Central Indiana and West Central Ohio recognize when cyst removal is appropriate. They then choose a removal technique based on the size, location, and type of cyst you have. With years of expertise to guide them, our general surgeons offer the full suite of removal options.

Common types of cysts

Removal might help with any type of cyst, but those affecting the skin in particular that might require removal include:

  • Epidermoid cyst: These skin cysts often form on the face, neck, or torso. They’re typically noncancerous and are also called sebaceous cysts.
  • Ganglion cyst: These noncancerous, fluid-filled lumps typically develop along tendons or joints, most commonly in the wrist or hand.
  • Milia cyst: Appearing as tiny white bumps, these are normally seen with infants but can affect adults.
  • Pilar cyst: These cysts typically arise on the scalp. They’re also called trichilemmal cysts.
  • Pilonidal cyst: This cyst develops between the buttocks and might become infected.

Types of cyst removal

When you need cyst removal, your provider will use one of these techniques:

  • Aspiration: Your surgeon uses a thin needle to drain the cyst. Sometimes, the surgeon might inject steroids to further shrink the size.
  • Cryosurgery: The surgeon freezes and destroys the cyst, with minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
  • Incision draining: The surgeon makes a small incision in the cyst and drains fluid or other substances out of it.
  • Surgical removal: Your surgeon removes the entire cyst, which prevents it from returning.

Getting ready for surgery

Are you ready for your upcoming procedure? Preparing for surgery is about more than showing up — it’s about taking the right steps to stay safe and supported. Find out how to prepare for a smooth surgical experience.

After your cyst removal

Cyst removal is typically an outpatient procedure, so you return home the same day. Your care team will bandage the procedure site or incision. Medication, as needed, helps manage pain. As the treated area heals, you’ll need to keep it clean to prevent infection. Additionally, you should follow any other orders from your provider.
