Surgical Patient Resources
When you have surgery scheduled, you probably have questions about what to do before, during, and after. Reid Health’s surgical patient resources provide the guidance you need.
Trust Reid Health for your surgery
We’re glad you’ve trusted us for your upcoming procedure. This page includes information you might find helpful as you prepare.
Where to go
Plan to arrive at the hospital or surgery center 90 minutes before your procedure. We offer free valet parking at the main entrance to our hospital in Richmond, so you and your surgical coach don’t need to worry about parking.
Reid Outpatient Surgery & Endoscopy (ROSE) and the Inpatient Surgery Waiting Room are located on the second floor of the hospital.
What to bring with you
Have these items with you when you arrive for surgery:
- A photo ID
- Discharge planning paperwork
- Your health insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid cards
- Your medications, including inhalers
If you’re having an outpatient procedure, you shouldn’t need to bring anything but the items listed above. If you’re having an inpatient procedure, you might want to bring personal items to make your stay more comfortable, such as books or magazines, glasses, and hearing aids, as well as any medical devices, such as a CPAP, you might need overnight.
You’ll be able to store items in a secure locker during your surgery, but you shouldn’t bring any valuable items with you.
Planning for the day
Your surgeon will let you know how long your procedure will last. Your surgical coach can monitor your progress on our TV tracker board, which allows them to know your surgical status. They can also take advantage of our chapel, cafes, art gallery, or gift shop while they wait. Our online facility map will help you and your surgical coach navigate our hospital.
- Our Golay Chapel is on the second floor of the hospital and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
- A self-guided tour of The Art of Healing allows visitors to enjoy our more than 700 pieces of art. The tour begins on the first floor with a suspended mobile of 16 clouds and then takes guests to the second floor to view an assortment of art, highlighting a variety of techniques and styles.
- The Café at Twelve Hundred serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as fresh-baked cookies, soft pretzels in the afternoon, and snacks throughout the day. Not your typical hospital cafeteria, we serve brick-oven specialty pizzas, smoothies, and even desserts you can take home.
- Reid Espresso Bar, on the main concourse near the Grand Staircase, offers Starbucks® coffee and espresso drinks, along with a variety of teas, cold drinks, and delicious baked goods.
- Your surgical coach can also browse The Ginko Boutique Gift Shop, which features unique gifts and flowers.
- If you will need supplies from our Home Medical Equipment store, your support person can get what you need — or make arrangements for delivery — while you’re in surgery. Home Medical Equipment is located next to the Gingko Boutique Gift Shop.
