Help your child build foundational social skills

Each week, families across East Central Indiana and West Central Ohio turn to our pediatric occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists to help their children master interacting with their world. Under our dedicated therapists’ guidance, children learn the best ways to communicate their thoughts, feelings, and work together with peers.

To help children gain confidence in their new skills, and bond with new friends experiencing similar challenges, we started the Social Thinkers Group at Reid Health. These four groups (broken out by age and ability) provide a safe environment for kids to practice social skills while learning and exploring with our therapists.

We focus on building teamwork, leadership, and communication skills while improving kids’ self-confidence.

Practicing social skills

In Social Thinkers group, kids work together with one of our highly trained speech-language pathologists  or occupational therapists to tackle everyday situations, using movement and language-building activities.

Age-appropriate social skills are introduced, such as:

  • Appropriate turn-taking
  • Asking and answering questions
  • Attention to tasks
  • Context switching
  • Emotional regulation
  • Flexible thinking
  • Independence
  • Maintaining eye contact
  • Perspective and understanding
  • Problem solving
  • Safety awareness
  • Understanding social cues

Why join our Social Thinkers Group?

We want to help your child thrive. That’s why each of our four Social Thinkers groups are divided by age and interests.

Each Reid Health Social Thinkers Group is led by an occupational therapist or speech-language pathologist who has been specially trained in working with children to improve social interactions. Together, the group uses speech and occupational therapy techniques to prepare them for real world situations. This allows kids to grow and practice their new skills in a safe, controlled environment.
