Body lift surgery: Gaining confidence after weight loss

If you’ve committed to a healthier lifestyle and achieved significant weight loss, you deserve to feel confident and comfortable in your own skin. For many people, the next step in that journey brings a new challenge: loose or sagging skin that often remains after the weight is gone.

A body lift is a transformative plastic surgery procedure designed to gently remove this excess skin, helping create a smoother, more toned body shape. At Reid Health in Richmond, Indiana, we deeply understand the dedication and hard work it takes to reach your weight loss goals. Our experienced and compassionate plastic surgery team is here to help you complete your transformation and feel your absolute best.

What is a body lift?

A body lift, often the final phase of a weight loss journey, is a major plastic surgery that addresses the excess skin that remains after a significant weight loss.

The primary purpose of body lift surgery is to improve your body’s overall shape and tone. After you lose a significant amount of weight, your skin might not have the elasticity to shrink back to your body’s new, smaller size. This can lead to hanging, sagging skin that might be uncomfortable, cause skin irritation, or keep you from feeling good about your new body.

It’s important to note that a body lift isn’t a weight loss procedure.

It’s intended for people who have already lost a great deal of weight and maintained their new, healthier weight for a stable period of time.

There are different types of body lift surgeries, but they all involve strategically placed incisions to remove excess skin and tighten the underlying tissues. A body lift is a more extensive procedure than a tummy tuck (or abdominoplasty), but a tummy tuck is often included as a part of a full body lift. A lower body lift (one of the most common types of body lifts) combines a tummy tuck with a procedure that addresses excess skin on the hips, thighs, and buttocks.

Benefits of a body lift

The benefits of a body lift are both physical and psychological. Physically, the procedure removes excess skin, which can improve hygiene and prevent uncomfortable skin irritation. It can also make it easier and more comfortable to wear clothes that fit properly. For many people, removing this loose skin makes it easier to exercise and stay active, which supports a healthy lifestyle.

Psychologically, the benefits can be just as significant. After all the hard work that goes into losing a large amount of weight, a body lift allows you to see the results of your efforts. It helps your physical appearance match the healthy person you feel like on the inside, which can lead to a greater sense of well-being and confidence in your new body.

Who is a good candidate?

A body lift is a major surgery, and our experienced plastic surgeon can help you determine if you’re a good candidate for this procedure.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, ideal candidates for a body lift have lost a significant amount of weight, are in good general health, don’t smoke, and have realistic expectations about the outcome.

Having realistic expectations is crucial. A body lift creates a smoother shape, but it isn’t intended to help you lose more weight. It’s important to understand that some scarring is a normal part of the surgical process.

This surgery also requires dedication to a healthy lifestyle. Maintaining a stable weight will yield longer-lasting results. Surgery is the final step in your journey, and achieving the best results requires a continued commitment to healthy habits.

What to expect during recovery

Body lift recovery requires patience and care, and our team will be with you every step of the way. Here’s a general overview of what you can expect:

  • Immediate care: After surgery, you might have small surgical drains in place temporarily. These flexible tubes help remove excess fluid, reducing swelling and preventing complications. We’ll also encourage you to walk around as soon as possible to help increase circulation and prevent blood clots.
  • Initial recovery: It’s normal to experience soreness, swelling, and bruising, all of which will gradually improve over time. You'll need to wear compression garments (which you can purchase at our Home Medical Equipment store) for several weeks to help reduce swelling and support your new body shape.
  • Return to activity: While you can typically resume light activities in about two to three weeks and return to work in four to five weeks, you’ll need to limit strenuous activity for at least six weeks.

Your provider will give you a detailed  recovery plan and be available to answer any questions you have throughout the process.
