Eyelid lift surgery to boost confidence and improve vision

Over time, the skin around your eyes can lose some of its natural firmness, leading to puffiness or drooping. Loose or sagging skin can also affect your vision. Eyelid lift surgery, also called blepharoplasty, can help open up your eyes, refresh your appearance, and in some cases, improve how well you see.

At Reid Health, our experienced plastic surgeon focuses on personal care. Whether your goal is to see more clearly, feel more confident, or both, an eyelid lift might be a great option for you.

What is eyelid lift surgery?

An eyelid lift is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin, muscle, and sometimes fat from the upper or lower eyelids. The goal is to reduce drooping eyelids, eliminate bags under the eyes, and improve the overall appearance of the eye area. If the sagging skin obstructs your sight, the procedure can also improve your field of vision. Eyelid lift surgery often complements other facial treatments, like a brow lift, to create a more balanced and youthful look.

Good candidates for eyelid lifts

Your surgeon will thoroughly review your medical history and eye health during your consultation to determine if eyelid surgery is a good fit for you. But generally, an eyelid lift surgery might be right for you if you:

  • Have generally good eye health: You may not be able to have an eyelid lift if you have serious eye conditions that could worsen after surgery.
  • Don’t smoke or are willing to quit: Smoking can slow healing after surgery and increase the risk of complications. Reid Health offers a special smoking cessation program to help you quit so you can safely have your surgery.
  • Have reasonable expectations about the results: An eyelid lift can improve tired or droopy eyes, but it won’t stop aging or change how other parts of your face appear.

What to expect during the procedure

Eyelid lift surgery is commonly performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia, sometimes combined with light sedation. Local anesthesia numbs just your eyelids to prevent pain, and light sedation helps you feel calm and relaxed during the procedure. The surgery typically lasts between one and three hours, and you can usually go home the same day as your procedure. Here are the main steps involved:

  • The surgeon makes small, precise incisions along natural eyelid folds or just below the lash line.
  • Next, they remove or reposition excess fat, skin, and muscle.
  • Finally, they carefully close the incisions with stitches.

Recovery from eyelid lift

As you recover, your eyelids will feel swollen and may look bruised. The swelling and bruising usually go away over time, but your surgeon can help you manage them until they do.

Before you go home, you will have a comprehensive postsurgical discharge plan that explains steps you’ll need to take as you recover.

Your care team will likely suggest that you:

  • Apply cold compresses to reduce swelling.
  • Attend follow-up visits for suture removal and checkups.
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes or wearing makeup until cleared.
  • Keep your head elevated, even while sleeping.
  • Protect your eyes from sun and wind exposure.
  • Take prescribed pain medications as directed.
  • Temporarily stop wearing contact lenses until you fully recovery.
