Reshaping your nose with rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, sometimes referred to as a nose job, is a type of plastic surgery that can change the shape and function of your nose. Whether you want to improve your facial balance or fix breathing problems, rhinoplasty offers an option that can boost your appearance and overall well-being.

At Reid Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery in Richmond, Indiana, our experienced plastic surgeon specializes in cosmetic and functional rhinoplasty. We work closely with you to create personalized treatment plans that address your unique goals and needs.

What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to reshape the nose. This can involve altering the nasal bone, cartilage, and soft tissues to improve the nose’s appearance or function. Some people opt for rhinoplasty to reduce the size of the nose, straighten a crooked nasal bridge or reshape the tip.

But rhinoplasty isn’t only about appearance. Many people choose to have the procedure to correct functional issues, like a deviated septum (a crooked or off-center nasal wall that interferes with breathing and sleeping), or deformities caused by injury or birth defects. Rhinoplasty surgery can correct these issues, allowing you to breathe more easily and sleep better.

How does rhinoplasty work?

Rhinoplasty is usually performed as an outpatient surgery, meaning you go home the same day as your procedure.

During the procedure, your plastic surgeon carefully makes incisions to access the nasal structure. Then, they reshape the bone and cartilage as needed. They might remove excess tissue, add pieces of cartilage to the nose (known as grafting) to strengthen its structure, or straighten and reposition a deviated septum. After the adjustments are made, the incisions are closed, and the nose is often stabilized with splints or packing (gauze).

There are two main approaches:

  • Closed rhinoplasty: Your surgeon makes incisions (cuts) inside the nostrils, leaving no visible scars outside the nose. This method is often used for less extensive reshaping.
  • Open rhinoplasty: A small incision is made across the columella (the tissue between the nostrils) to allow better access to the nasal bones and cartilage.

Who is a candidate for rhinoplasty?

The goal of rhinoplasty is to improve facial symmetry or the appearance of the nose or to correct a health concern. It’s important to talk to a board-certified plastic surgeon who can assess your facial features, discuss your goals, and recommend whether rhinoplasty is right for you.

To have rhinoplasty, you should be in good overall health. Certain medical conditions can increase your risk for complications. If needed, Reid Health providers can help address these conditions so you can have rhinoplasty.

You should also have realistic expectations that the results might not be perfect or flawless.

What to expect during and after rhinoplasty

Before the surgery

You’ll have a detailed consultation with your surgeon to review your medical history and expectations. They might take photographs and use computer imaging to help plan your surgery.

During the surgery

Rhinoplasty generally takes about one to three hours and is done under anesthesia. The approach — open or closed — depends on your individual needs. After reshaping your nose, your surgeon will close the incisions and apply splints to support your new nasal shape.

After the surgery

You’ll spend a few hours in recovery before going home the same day. Having a friend or family member available to drive you home and assist you is important, as you may feel groggy from anesthesia.

Recovery period: what you need to know

Recovery from rhinoplasty takes time, and being patient is key to getting the best results. Before you leave the hospital, your team will give you a comprehensive postsurgical discharge plan to help address concerns you might have in the hours and days after surgery.

In general, though, here’s what you can expect during your recovery:

Week 1

You might experience swelling, bruising around the eyes, nasal congestion, and mild discomfort. Keeping your head elevated and applying cold compresses can reduce swelling. Most patients wear a nasal splint for five to seven days.

Weeks 2 to 4

Swelling and bruising gradually fade. You can usually return to work or school after about two weeks, but you should avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting for at least four to six weeks.

3 to 6 months

Most swelling resolves, and your nose begins to look more natural. Results are typically visible within a year, as subtle swelling continues to subside.

Risks and considerations

While rhinoplasty is generally safe, it carries potential risks, including infection, bleeding, scarring, and difficulty breathing through the nose. A qualified, board-certified plastic surgeon with experience in rhinoplasty will work with you to reduce any risks. They’ll discuss all your concerns and help you weigh the benefits and possible complications before proceeding.

Does insurance cover rhinoplasty?

Insurance might cover all or part of the cost if your rhinoplasty is performed to correct breathing problems, such as a deviated septum or other nasal obstructions. Cosmetic rhinoplasty, which is done to improve appearance, is usually not covered by insurance.

During your consultation, Reid Health’s team can help you understand your insurance benefits and explore financing options if needed.
