Working together for you

At Reid Cancer Center, we take a team approach to care. This means our cancer specialists, nurses, cancer navigators, financial navigators, and oncology social workers rely on one another's expertise and experience when making decisions about your treatment plan. They communicate regularly to ensure you receive coordinated, effective care.

You and your family are also considered important members of the care team. Your questions, suggestions, and ideas are welcome.

The team at Reid

Our providers work with medical professionals from different specialty areas to provide coordinated, expert care. Your care team might include providers from:

  • Medical oncology: A medical oncologist is trained to diagnose, treat, and manage cancer using medications. In most cases, the medical oncologist will oversee your treatment, referring you to other specialists as necessary. The medical oncologist will typically oversee chemotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy treatments.
  • Radiation oncology: A radiation oncologist oversees your treatment with radiation therapy — treatment that uses focused radiation beams to kill and destroy cancer cells.
  • Surgical oncology: Our surgeons work closely with our cancer teams to provide advanced, effective surgeries that remove as much of your cancer as possible. If you need another treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy, they’ll work with specialists in those areas to coordinate your care.
  • Infusion center/IV therapy/outpatient lab: Many types of medical oncology, including chemotherapy, are delivered through IV infusion. You can receive your treatments in our comfortable infusion center, staffed by caring nurses and other providers who understand your needs.
  • Inpatient cancer care: If you have to be admitted to the hospital while you undergo diagnosis tests or treatment for cancer, you’ll receive care in our inpatient unit which is staffed by a team of cancer experts.
  • Nutritionists: Our nutritionists can work with you to manage side effects of treatment and maintain your strength while you receive care.
  • Wound healing: Some cancer treatments can cause nonhealing wounds. If you need care, you’ll work with our team of specialists, who offer new and innovative treatments for complex wounds.

Cancer navigators

When people are diagnosed with cancer, they often feel overwhelmed and find it difficult to process information about their illness. Our cancer navigators can help. These caring nurses provide support for patients and their families throughout every phase of treatment. They can:

  • Answer questions about your treatment plan
  • Suggest support services
  • Help you find ways to take charge of your own recovery
  • Help set up provider appointments
  • Make sure you have transportation to and from the hospital
  • And much more

Some patients rely heavily on their cancer navigator, while others call only occasionally for help. Whatever your needs, the cancer navigators are there for you.

Financial navigators

We want you to focus on your health during cancer treatment, not financial stress. Our financial navigators are here to help you and your family understand your insurance coverage, billing, financial assistance options, and other aspects of paying for your care. We understand how stressful finances can be, and our team will work with you to ease the burden of payment so you concentrate on healing.

Oncology social workers

Our oncology social workers play an important role on your team as counselors and a supportive resource connecting you to non-medical needs that make your journey easier. Your social worker can serve as an empathetic listener who can help you work through the emotions that come with a cancer diagnosis. They can also help you access services, such as home health equipment, Social Security disability, and even transportation to and from your appointments, to help ensure you get the care you need.
