Joint Replacement Surgery
When you need joint replacement surgery, our experienced orthopedic surgeons offer robotic and minimally invasive technologies for shorter recoveries and fewer complications.
Tailoring joint replacement solutions to you
Rest, ice, compression, and elevation are often — but not always — enough to overcome joint pain. When those no longer provide relief, though, joint replacement could be right for you.
In East Central Indiana and West Central Ohio, quality joint replacement surgeries are available close to home. Before a surgery, patients will meet with their orthopedic expert at the Reid Health Comprehensive Bone & Joint Center to determine causes of muscle or joint pain. They will also work to replace or repair damaged joints, using minimally invasive and robotic techniques when possible.
We help you move past the pain, regain your range of motion, and get back to your routine.

Advanced hip and knee replacements with Mako
Our orthopedic surgeons strive to provide every patient with excellent results. Thanks to Mako® Robotic-Arm assisted technology, they do so consistently and with incredible accuracy.
Mako combines 3D imaging with computer-aided planning to design joints that fit your anatomy, helping ensure a precise fit and long-term success of your new joint. During surgery, your surgeon controls robotic arms via computer while monitoring a high-definition, real-time video of your surgical site.
Reid’s orthopedic surgeons use Mako for total knee and hip replacements.
Your joint replacement options
At the Reid Health Comprehensive Bone & Joint Center, we provide a full range of joint repair and joint replacement surgery options. Whether you need your hip replaced, total knee replacement, or another joint procedure, it’s all here.
Our experienced surgeons can perform a range of joint replacement surgeries:
- Total hip replacements: In a total hip replacement (also called total hip arthroplasty), the surgeon removes the damaged ball and the cartilage lining the hip socket and replaces both with artificial parts made from metal or ceramic. If only part of the hip is damaged, a partial hip replacement is sometimes an option. Typically used to repair fractures, this procedure replaces the head of your femur, while preserving the rest.
- Total knee replacement: Also called knee arthroplasty, a total knee replacement is a procedure to replace or cap the cartilage and bones around the knee, including the kneecap, with metal and plastic parts. The goal of a total knee replacement is to help you live your life with less pain. Total knee replacement surgery is safe and effective, and complication risk is low.
- Partial knee replacement: If you only have damage on one section of your knee joint, you could be a candidate for a partial knee replacement. A partial knee replacement, sometimes called knee resurfacing, involves replacing part of a damaged knee, leaving the rest of your natural knee intact.
- Shoulder replacement: Less common than hip and knee replacements, total shoulder replacements are being done more often, usually to help address arthritis, rotator cuff injuries, severe bone deterioration (avascular necrosis), and fractures. Reid’s orthopedic surgeons have the expertise to perform total shoulder replacements, hemiarthroplasty (when only the head of the humerus is replaced), and newer reverse shoulder replacement procedures.

Joint replacement recovery and rehab
Directly following a hip replacement or knee replacement procedure at the Reid Health Comprehensive Bone & Joint Center, the specialized orthopedic rehabilitation team steps in and personalizes a joint replacement recovery plan built around your needs.
With decades of experience helping patients in Indiana and Ohio, our recovery teams know what it takes to get you moving again.
Postsurgical care
Your first step in joint replacement recovery is postsurgical care. Immediately after your procedure, recovery begins in a private room to ensure your vital signs are stable and you’re comfortable. Before you leave, our care team will monitor your muscle function and offer advice or medical treatments for preventing blood clots in the legs.
Physical therapy
For hip or knee replacement recovery, our physical therapists meet with you either the day of or the morning after your orthopedic surgery. They will complete a bedside evaluation to check how well you can perform daily activities.
Your treatment program will help you set realistic goals to improve your quality of life, including:
- Getting in and out of bed
- Getting in and out of a chair
- Improving strength and range of motion
- Walking a distance of 350 feet
- Walking up and down stairs
We offer group therapy sessions in the morning or afternoon. Many patients can go home after the morning rehabilitation program, if they can meet the goals set by their orthopedic physical therapist.
Occupational therapy
Another orthopedic rehab service offered at Reid is occupational therapy, which helps you regain independence after joint replacement surgery.
We provide therapies to help you:
- Bathe and dress
- Improve mobility in your knee or hip joint
- Perform basic hygiene activities
We also have assistive devices, including long-handled shoehorns or sock aids, your primary care provider can order, should you need long-term assistance.
