Our board-certified spine surgeon, Hon Vien, DO, has unique training in this advanced system, which has helped numerous patients relieve their severe back and spine pain. 

Pain management for spine conditions

We take a team approach to managing pain. At Reid Health, our pain management specialists work with physical therapists and mental health professionals to address the physical and emotional aspects of pain, while also offering medical management when needed.  

We personalize your care. Ensuring it meets your needs and allowing you to get your life back. Your treatment may include:  

• Injections: including epidurals, steroid injections, and nerve blocks.  
• Pain medications
• Intrathecal pain pumps, small, surgically implanted devices that deliver pain medicine directly to your spine. 

Minimally invasive spine surgeries with Mazor  

If you need spine surgery at Reid Health, your surgery will use one of the most advanced technologies in our area:  Mazor Renaissance® Guidance System. Mazor’s robotic-assisted, minimally invasive surgeries combine high-quality imaging with specially designed surgical tools. Allowing your spine surgeon to alleviate severe pain with minimal cutting involved.

Before surgery, your spine surgeon might order a CT scan. This is used to create a personalized, highly detailed preoperative surgical plan with Mazor.  

During your surgery, the system’s Stealth™ Navigation technology, including a navigation camera and imaging, gives your surgeon real-time insights. Helping ensure precise movements and placement of screws, artificial discs, and other implants.

Throughout the operation, your surgeon controls the robotic arm and tools using the system’s console. Adapting as needed to make sure your surgery is as successful as possible.

How Reid Health surgeons use Mazor  

Mazor is used for many minimally invasive spine surgeries at Reid Health, including:

• Biopsies to detect cancer, infections, and bone diseases.
• Spinal fusion, which can address conditions including degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, scoliosis, and herniated discs.
• Vertebroplasty to repair fractured vertebra

Benefits of Mazor for spine surgeries

Traditional spine surgeries can be difficult to perform accurately. For example, a surgeon placing screws in the spine is typically 80% to 90% accurate when operating freehand.  

Surgery with Mazor, however, allows for up to 99% accuracy in screw placement. Leading to better results and less pain during recovery.

 Patients who have Mazor spinal surgery often also experience:  

• Fewer complications  
• Less soft tissue manipulation, reducing pain and the need for narcotic medications
• Reduced need for extra surgeries

Additionally, minimally invasive spine surgeries can usually be performed on an outpatient basis, which means most of our patients go home the same day as their procedure.
