Overcome knee pain with personalized care

The knee is the largest joint in the human body, and as such, it’s easy to injure. Knee pain is common in people of all ages, and no matter its cause, pain makes regular activities difficult.

The orthopedic specialists at Reid Health Comprehensive Bone & Joint Center are committed to care that’s focused on you. Our team develops individualized treatment plans designed with your lifestyle and goals in mind.

Advanced orthopedic knee care at Reid

Reid’s orthopedic knee specialists offer a comprehensive approach to addressing knee pain. Your care might begin with conservative treatments, to help you regain function and mobility without surgery.

However, if you need orthopedic surgery, our team uses advanced, robotic technologies that allow your surgeon to operate with precision through small incisions, letting you benefit from faster recoveries and less postsurgical pain.

You can schedule an appointment and be assessed quickly, starting care as soon as possible — and close to home. We ensure you have access to the most appropriate treatments and start your care early, so you can get back to your active life with less pain.

Common causes of knee pain

Your knee joint includes three bones: your thighbone (femur), shinbone (tibia), and kneecap (patella).

Most knee pain is the result of overuse injuries, a normal part of getting through your day. It can also develop from a range of sports injuries and medical conditions.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries

More likely to affect athletes, these sudden injuries occur when the ACL, a ligament just below your kneecap, gets stretched or torn. The injuries are often accompanied by a popping sound, and pain in the front of the knee typically comes on within 24 hours. You’ll also notice swelling, tenderness, and a sensation that your knee isn’t stable.

Arthritis

Osteoarthritis, which develops because of wear and tear on the joints, is the most common form of this degenerative disease, but rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease, and other types of arthritis can also cause knee pain.

Baker's cyst

Baker's cysts are a very common cause of knee stiffness and discomfort. They often form behind the knee. They might disappear on their own, but medications and lifestyle changes can help reduce pain.

Medical collateral ligament (MCL) injuries

These injuries affect the MCL, located inside your knee, and are often the result of force to the knee. As with ACL injuries, MCL injuries occur when the ligament gets stretched or torn. Symptoms are very similar, except with MCL injuries, you’ll feel pain on the inside of the knee.

Meniscus tears

You have two menisci that sit just below your kneecap that can wear down over time or get damaged during a sudden injury — both of which can lead to a tear. You might not notice a meniscus tear immediately, but pain, stiffness, and swelling typically develop over two to three days. You might hear a clicking sound or notice a locking sensation when you move your knee.

Patellofemoral pain syndrome

A common issue for highly active individuals, this term refers to pain around the kneecap at the front of the knee. It typically results from overuse and can be eased with rest, ice, compression, elevation (RICE), medication, and changes to activities that cause pain.

Diagnosing and treating your knee pain

Our orthopedic surgeons offer comprehensive diagnosis and evaluation of your symptoms. They often opt for conservative, nonsurgical solutions to help you manage knee pain and turn to minimally invasive procedures when those no longer provide relief.
