An innovative program for getting the prenatal care you need

Pregnancy can be exciting, joyful, and yet sometimes confusing and uncertain. Wouldn’t it be helpful to walk through your pregnancy alongside other women who’re also expecting?

Through the CenteringPregnancy program at Reid Health, you can do exactly that. CenteringPregnancy is a new and innovative way of getting the prenatal care you need during pregnancy.

What is the CenteringPregnancy program?

Instead of solo prenatal visits like you’d have in the traditional care model, you’ll participate in group prenatal care. During these visits, which last about 90 minutes, you can interact with women who have similar due dates, allowing you to share the ups and downs of pregnancy with others who truly understand what you’re going through.

When compared with a traditional prenatal visit, CenteringPregnancy offers the opportunity to spend more time with a women’s health provider, both in the group setting and one-on-one for a belly check. You can also play a bigger role in your own pregnancy care by taking your blood pressure and weighing yourself at each visit.

Whether you’re a first-time mom or expecting your fourth baby, you can benefit from this fresh approach to prenatal care right here in our communities. We’re proud to offer the program in both Richmond and Connersville.

Benefits of CenteringPregnancy

The CenteringPregnancy program at Reid Health offers a unique way of getting the prenatal care needed to keep you and your baby healthy. Women who participate in this program experience many benefits for themselves and their babies, including:

  • Active participation in prenatal care
  • Better health outcomes, such as a reduced risk of preterm birth
  • Greater likelihood of successful breastfeeding
  • Improved self-confidence
  • More time with a women’s health provider
  • Peer discussions about pregnancy and parenting
  • Relationships with other expectant moms in the community
  • Strengthened support system

The value of sharing pregnancy with other moms

In the traditional prenatal care model, prenatal visits operate like any other medical visit — moms have their vitals checked, talk briefly with a medical provider, and then go on their way. You might see other moms in the waiting room, but you don’t have much chance to interact.

CenteringPregnancy flips that model on its head. Prenatal visits in the program are centered on you and your fellow expectant moms.

Spending time with other women who’re expecting babies around the same time allows you to build a support system in the community. Not only can you share your experiences and benefit from those of others during your prenatal visits, but you can also establish relationships that will last beyond pregnancy.

There’s another benefit, too. Interacting with your peers can help you learn about pregnancy, labor and delivery, and parenting in ways you never could from a lecture or a pamphlet. Learning from others in your shoes helps prepare you for what’s ahead.
