Preventive screenings

Welcome to the Reid Health Breast Center

The Reid Health Breast Center is dedicated to helping women in East Central Indiana and West Central Ohio maintain breast health. Our breast imaging center offers all-digital, leading-edge mammography and is accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, a program of the American College of Surgeons.

Breast cancer doesn’t always cause symptoms, making annual screenings very important. Finding breast cancer early before it has spread is one factor in successfully treating the disease.

We understand early detection makes all the difference, so we’ve reached the highest level of standards set forth by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). NAPBC accreditation means our Breast Center has met the organization’s rigorous standards for offering the highest level of quality care in breast health.

3D mammography

Mammograms are the gold standard for breast cancer detection. At Reid Health Breast Center, we offer advanced 3D mammography, also known as breast tomosynthesis.

3D mammograms can detect breast cancer at higher rates than conventional, 2D scans. During a 2D mammogram, two X-ray images of the breasts are taken, one from top to bottom and another from side to side. A 3D mammogram, however, takes 25 X-ray images from many different angles. A computer then produces a highly detailed 3D picture, allowing providers to better identify cancer. 3D mammograms also reduce your chances of getting called back for additional imaging.

You don’t need a provider’s referral to obtain a mammogram at Reid Health Breast Center. We offer early morning and late-day appointments, as well as appointments during regular business hours.

Breast ultrasound

A breast ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images. Your provider might order a breast ultrasound after a mammogram to further investigate suspicious areas or distinguish between a solid mass or a fluid-filled cyst.

Breast ultrasounds can also provide valuable information to women with dense breasts, breasts with more glandular and connective tissue than fatty tissue. Mammograms alone might not always detect breast cancer in women with dense breasts, and combining a mammogram with a breast ultrasound might help improve cancer detection.

Breast biopsy

If your mammogram results are abnormal, you might need a breast biopsy, a procedure in which a provider samples tissue from a mass or lump to see if it’s cancerous.

Our breast imaging specialists have received accreditation for two forms of image-guided breast biopsy:

  • Stereotactic breast biopsy: During a stereotactic breast biopsy, the provider makes a very small incision and guides a needle to the area of concern using mammogram images. The tissue sample is then removed with a vacuum-assisted device.
  • Ultrasound-guided breast biopsy: Similarly, during an ultrasound-guided breast biopsy, a provider uses ultrasound to find a suspicious area and take a tissue sample using a vacuum-assisted device or other method.

Image-guided breast biopsies typically last around an hour and use local anesthesia.
