The support system you need during pregnancy

Pregnancy isn’t one-size-fits-all. Although some expectant mothers seem to easily navigate the challenges of pregnancy, others might need a little extra help. You can find that help and an invaluable support system through Reid Health’s pregnancy navigator program.

Our pregnancy navigators are specially trained to help you access the prenatal care and support services you need for your nine months of pregnancy and the weeks and months beyond.

Reid’s caring pregnancy navigators

Every mom-to-be who comes to Reid for a new obstetrics visit meets with our navigators, who review your health and needs and connect you with services that might help you stay healthy, attend appointments, or address other concerns. Their goal is to help you navigate the next nine months confidently, especially if you have a high-risk pregnancy or need extra support.

After this first visit, they’ll review their notes and develop a care plan unique to you. Throughout your care, they might:

  • Arrange transportation to and from appointments
  • Help you coordinate time off work, if needed
  • Follow up with you after childbirth to see if you need help managing health conditions
  • Connect you with other local resources, such as our car seat safety program and safe sleep initiative
  • Help you navigate mental health concerns after delivery

Who can benefit

Pregnancy is filled with questions and to-dos, and a good support system is a must.

Any expectant mom can benefit from working with our pregnancy navigators, but having a navigator can be especially helpful for certain women, including:

  • First-time moms
  • Those facing barriers to care, such as housing insecurity or addiction
  • Women with high-risk pregnancies or other health conditions
  • Women who might require multiple medical providers during pregnancy

Services we offer

Pregnancy navigators do exactly what it sounds like — they help you navigate pregnancy. In this role, our navigators can connect you with community resources and provide other support services.

They often help mothers by:

  • Advocating for your health and your baby’s health
  • Answering questions related to pregnancy, labor and delivery, newborn care, and parenting
  • Attending medical appointments with you, if needed and wanted
  • Helping you find nutrition and wellness information and resources to support a healthy pregnancy
  • Offering breastfeeding support
  • Providing educational resources about labor and delivery
  • Scheduling appointments with your care team

The value of having a pregnancy navigator

Pregnancy navigators, also called perinatal navigators, are nurses or social workers who have specialized training related to pregnancy and childbirth. Their goal is to keep you and your baby safe and healthy throughout pregnancy and delivery.

Since every woman and every pregnancy are unique, the role of a pregnancy navigator takes on different shapes and forms. In the end, though, we’re here to provide you with the support and encouragement you need, no matter what that looks like.
