Women supporting women

Life isn’t always easy. Illnesses, life changes, loss, and other circumstances can be difficult. One thing all women should know when they feel overwhelmed by life is they aren’t alone — and the best way to feel less alone is by attending a support group.

As the name implies, support groups allow you to meet with other people to share struggles and challenges as well as wins and successes. Even happy changes, like having a baby, are easier to navigate when you can talk to other people going through the same things.

Reid Health’s support groups offer women many opportunities to meet with providers and other women to learn coping strategies, get tips and insights from each other, and feel mentally healthier, knowing they have a strong network of support from people just like them.

Support groups for new moms

Being a new mom can be exhilarating, but it can also feel impossibly hard. We offer several support groups specifically designed for new moms and the challenges they face. You’ll get valuable tips and insight from medical providers and other moms.

  • Milk Matters: A mother-to-mother breastfeeding support group sponsored by Reid Health and the Wayne County Breastfeeding Coalition
  • Postpartum Support: Support and information about dealing with maternal mental health challenges

Support groups for life challenges

Chronic illnesses, such as cancer, and challenges like substance abuse might feel easier to navigate when you share your experiences with others going through the same things. We offer support groups for many life circumstances, including:

  • Alcoholics Anonymous: Regular meetings help people overcome alcohol addiction and find strength in their recovery.
  • Cancer Support Group: This group offers support to people with cancer and caregivers and often features guest speakers.
  • Living Through the Grief: Navigate grief and loss in this twice-monthly support group, led by our chaplain.
  • Stroke Support Group: This group offers support to stroke survivors and their families and provides education on stroke survivorship.

The value of support groups

Sharing your experience with others through a support group not only helps you manage the ups and downs of life, but it can also help you better cope with a chronic illness or new life change, such as having a new baby.

Support groups give you an opportunity to meet and talk to other people in similar circumstances. Participating in a support group helps you feel less alone — you have peers who “get it.”

Research has shown support programs, such as support groups, offer many benefits. They can help you find important educational information and social and emotional support, and you can interact with others, reducing social isolation.
