Vascular Screening
Reid Health Heart & Vascular Center offers affordable vascular screenings to detect risks early, empowering you to make lifesaving health changes in your community.
Vascular screenings: A few minutes can save your life
Vascular diseases can be fatal — but they’re also highly preventable. A vascular screening at Reid Health in Richmond, Greenville, or Connersville can help you learn if you’re at risk for a vascular condition and, if so, take steps to protect yourself today and long into the future.
These screenings can offer potentially lifesaving information about blockages, clots, and other problems in your arteries and veins. These issues can cause some of the most common forms of vascular disease, including strokes.
What is a vascular screening?
Your heart pumps blood through your body. Your vascular system carries blood where it needs to go. When the arteries and veins that make up your vascular system become clogged or blocked, serious health problems can develop, including stroke, abdominal aortic aneurysm, and peripheral artery disease.
Our simple three-part vascular screening uses ultrasound imaging and other measurements to show whether you have clogs or blockages in these blood vessels.
What’s included
During a vascular screening, you’ll have three tests:
- Abdominal aortic ultrasound: This imaging test shows your aorta, which carries blood from your heart to the rest of your body. It can reveal signs of an abdominal aortic aneurysm, such as bulging or weakening in the aorta’s wall.
- Ankle-brachial index: For this test, a provider will measure blood pressure in your ankle and upper arm. Comparing the two readings helps your provider know if you’re at risk for peripheral artery disease.
- Carotid duplex: This scan measures the rate at which blood flows through the carotid arteries. These are the major blood vessels in the neck and supply blood to the face and brain. A carotid duplex can identify your risk for stroke.

- Have diabetes or hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Smoke cigarettes or have a history of smoking
- Haven't had a screening in five or more years
What to expect during a vascular screening
Vascular scans do not require much preparation. You’ll receive instructions from your provider beforehand about what to expect and if there are any special steps you need to take.
The three-part test takes about 45 minutes. You’ll receive your results by MyChart and we can send them to your primary care provider if you ask us to. Then, you and your provider can review the results together and decide whether you need treatment for a vascular condition or help managing risk factors.
