Coronary Bypass Surgery

Restoring heart health with coronary bypass surgery
Coronary bypass surgery, or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), is a lifesaving procedure designed to improve blood flow to the heart in people with coronary artery disease. When blocked or narrowed arteries keep oxygen-rich blood from reaching your heart, CABG creates a new pathway for restoring circulation. Bypass surgery is a collaborative decision made between the cardiologist and surgeon to determine the best course of care for people in East Central Indiana and West Central Ohio. CABG not only treats a common form of heart disease, it can also reduce chest pain, shortness of breath, and other serious complications. Our cardiologists and heart surgeons, based in East Central Indiana and West Central Ohio, work together to determine whether it’s the right option for you.

What happens during coronary bypass surgery?
During coronary bypass surgery, a surgeon removes a healthy blood vessel from another part of your body (a “graft”) and places it near the blocked area of a coronary artery. This graft allows blood to bypass the blockage, restoring healthy blood flow. Traditional bypass surgery involves a large incision in your chest. Your heart is temporarily stopped, and a heart-lung machine circulates blood while the surgeon operates. It’s a type of open-heart surgery and takes about three to six hours to complete.
CABG recovery
Recovery from coronary bypass surgery is a gradual process. You’ll stay in an intensive care unit for your entire recovery, which is usually five to seven days.
Full recovery can take up to 12 weeks, and you’ll need to take regular medications, follow up with your healthcare team, and participate in cardiac rehabilitation.
Cardiac rehabilitation to strengthen your heart
Cardiac rehabilitation at Reid is a medically supervised program designed to help you recover and strengthen your heart after coronary bypass surgery. It combines monitored exercise, heart-healthy education, and emotional support to improve your heart health, reduce the risk of future heart problems, and enhance your quality of life.
Cardiac rehab allows you to safely rebuild your strength, manage risk factors like high blood pressure or cholesterol, and gain the confidence to return to daily activities — all with the help of specialized therapists supporting and cheering you on as you recover.
