What is vascular surgery?
Vascular surgery is a type of medical treatment that focuses on the blood vessels in your body. This includes everything from arteries to veins. If you're experiencing issues like blockages, aneurysms, or varicose veins, vascular surgery might be the right option for you. The goal is to improve blood flow and help you feel better overall.
The procedures can vary from minimally invasive techniques, which involve small incisions, to more traditional surgeries. Regardless of what you might be facing, we're here to help you understand your options and get the care you need.

Types of vascular surgery available at Reid
You can often manage vascular disease through changes to your diet and activity levels and with medications. When those solutions no longer prove successful, our team tailors the right treatment to your unique condition and health needs.
Angioplasty and vascular stenting
During this procedure, a surgeon inserts a small tube called a catheter into a blocked blood vessel. A balloon on the catheter’s tip is inflated to open the vessel and improve blood flow.
Depending on your specific issue, your surgeon might place a stent inside the blood vessel. This small mesh tube helps the blood vessel stay open.
Catheter embolization
A catheter embolization is a procedure in which your vascular surgeon inserts a medication or synthetic material into a blood vessel to stop blood from flowing to a particular area of the body.
You could need catheter embolization if you have an aneurysm. It can also treat bleeding caused by conditions not related to your vascular system, such as heavy menstrual bleeding or internal bleeding after a traumatic injury.
Catheter-directed thrombolysis
Some types of vascular diseases can cause blood to thicken, which raises the risk of clots. Catheter-directed thrombolysis is a procedure that helps remove these clots. It involves using a thin tube called a catheter, guided by X-ray images, to bring medicine or special devices directly to the blocked blood vessels to dissolve the clots.
Carotid endarterectomy
This surgical procedure clears blockages inside carotid arteries to help prevent a stroke. The carotid arteries are located in your neck, and they carry blood to your brain. When they narrow or become blocked, you can have a stroke.
People with moderate and severe blockage of their carotid artery can benefit from this procedure.
TCAR
Transcarotid artery revascularization is a minimally invasive alternative to carotid endarterectomy. Providers use TCAR to treat carotid artery disease, also called carotid artery stenosis. This condition arises when fatty plaque accumulates on the walls of the arteries, leading to their narrowing or blockage.
TCAR is designed to treat this issue by restoring proper blood flow.
