What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive medical procedure that involves injecting a special solution directly into spider veins and smaller varicose veins. Called sclerosing solution, this liquid or foam contains chemicals that irritate the lining of the vein, causing it to swell and stick together.

During a sclerotherapy treatment, our providers use fine needles to inject the sclerosing solution into the targeted veins. After the veins close up, they begin to scar and collapse, redirecting your blood into nearby veins. Once the collapsing and scarring is complete, the sealed-off veins fade from view, improving the appearance of your skin and relieving associated symptoms.

Sclerotherapy for spider and varicose veins

Sclerotherapy is primarily used to address two conditions:

  • Spider veins: These smaller, web-like veins appear close to the skin's surface, usually on the legs or face. They aren’t painful for most people, but they can negatively impact your self-image.
  • Varicose veins: These enlarged, bulging, twisted veins often appear blue or purple. They can cause discomfort, pain, cramping, itching, or swelling in the legs. Sclerotherapy is particularly effective for treating smaller varicose veins, but it might sometimes be used to treat larger veins.

What to expect

Sclerotherapy only takes 15 to 30 minutes and doesn’t require anesthesia. Most people experience very little pain at the injection site. Sclerotherapy treatment can be performed on multiple veins at the same time. However, the number of veins treated in a single session depends on the size and location of the veins and your overall health. Your vein specialist might recommend wearing compression stockings for up to three weeks after the procedure. Side effects could include allergic reactions.
