Advanced abdominal aortic aneurysm treatment

Reid Health Heart & Vascular Center is committed to providing leading-edge vascular care, including endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), for people in East Central Indiana and West Central Ohio. This minimally invasive procedure treats abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) with precision and efficiency, lowering your chances of complications and increasing the odds of a quick recovery.

Our surgeons are highly skilled in the latest EVAR techniques, including the use of fenestrated stent grafts for complex cases.

What is EVAR?

The abdominal aorta is a large artery that carries blood from your heart to your lower body. When the aortic walls weaken and bulge, you can develop an AAA, which can be life-threatening if it ruptures.

An EVAR procedure can prevent an AAA from rupturing. Unlike a traditional, open aneurysm repair, EVAR uses very small incisions.

During EVAR, your vascular surgeon makes a small incision in your groin. Using a catheter, they guide a small mesh tube covered in fabric called a compressed stent graft to your aorta. Once the graft is in place, your vascular surgeon expands it, creating a new path for blood to flow and reducing pressure on the weakened aortic walls.

EVAR offers several advantages over open surgery, including:

  • Lower risk of complications
  • Quicker recovery, which means you’re back to your favorite activities within weeks, not months
  • Reduced blood loss
  • Shorter hospital stay compared to open surgery

Types of EVAR

We offer several types of EVAR procedures to address different anatomical challenges and patient needs. In addition to standard EVAR procedures for straightforward AAAs, our surgeons use leading-edge techniques to treat people with complex AAAs or AAAs in locations that make regular EVAR risky. These include:

  • Fenestrated EVAR (FEVAR): This specialized procedure treats AAAs located in or near the branching arteries that connect to the kidney.
  • Branched EVAR (B-EVAR): This technique treats thoracoabdominal aneurysms and can be used when an AAA is in an unusual part of the aorta.

Our skilled surgeons will determine the most appropriate EVAR technique based on your specific anatomical needs and overall health condition. Whether you've been recently diagnosed with an AAA or are seeking a second opinion, trust us to provide expert care with a patient-centered approach every step of the way.
