Expert care for congestive heart failure

Although a diagnosis of congestive heart failure can seem alarming, it doesn’t mean your heart has stopped. Instead, it’s struggling to pump enough blood. Getting treatment early can help the specialists at Reid Health Heart & Vascular Center keep your heart working well for as long as possible.

What is congestive heart failure?

Congestive heart failure is a condition in which your heart struggles to pump blood throughout your body. It has to work harder to keep up with your body’s demand for oxygen-rich blood. Over time, your heart gets weaker and has a harder time pumping blood.

As your heart gets weaker, you can feel tired and have less energy to do the things you used to. In the early stages, you can manage heart failure with medicines and healthy changes to your lifestyle. As the condition gets worse, you will likely need a heart procedure.

Congestive heart failure symptoms

When your heart doesn’t beat as well as it should, your body adapts by narrowing blood vessels to keep pressure steady and moving blood to areas that need it most. Over time, your body has a harder time adapting to these changes and you develop symptoms, such as:

  • Chest pain
  • Cough
  • Difficulty breathing when lying down
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Shortness of breath, even during mild activity
  • Weakness and general fatigue
  • Weight gain that often occurs with swelling in the legs and ankles

Congestive heart failure treatments

Heart failure has no cure, but treatment can help manage symptoms so you can maintain a good quality of life. In the early stages of heart failure, you may need only medications and lifestyle changes. But when the condition progresses, your Reid Health heart specialist can use advanced treatments and therapies to get you on the road to better heart health.

CardioMEMS™ HF System

The CardioMEMS™ HF System involves implanting a wireless sensor in an artery to measure pressure. You can send daily readings to your care team from home. That helps them treat problems quickly, reducing the chances of you needing a hospital stay.
